Ahead of Agri-Food Europe in Amsterdam next month, Expana spent 5 minutes with speaker Jeff Tripician, CEO of Meatable.
As a leader in cultivated meat technology, we discussed the potential of the sector, why collaboration with the traditional meat industry is vital, and the reason behind his move from traditional animal agriculture to this novel field.
[Expana] Can you start by sharing a few words about your role and what Meatable does?
[Jeff Tripician] I am proud to be the CEO of Meatable, as we’re leading the charge in revolutionizing how we produce and consume meat. With groundbreaking technology that produces planet-friendly meat in days instead of months/years, Meatable is setting a new standard for efficiency, sustainability, and scalability in the food industry. Our cultivated meat technology is designed to complement and integrate into traditional meat supply chains, offering opportunities for partnerships that strengthen the entire system.
Meatable’s process uses of pluripotent stem cells with patented opti-ox™ technology, which enables cells to multiply and differentiate into mature muscle and fat cells (real meat) in a matter of days (vs. months/years for traditional livestock). This process ensures superior taste and quality versus competition.
[Expana] Given your background working in traditional animal agriculture, what made you transition from working in this sector to the cultivated protein industry? Why do you think this sector has so much potential?
[Jeff Tripician] As we all know, animal agriculture has been pivotal in ensuring there is enough food for a hungry population. Unfortunately, this type of agriculture does come with negative consequences: impact on the quality of our soil and water, its negative contribution to climate change and the number of animals required. It’s clear to me we cannot go on like this, as we’re already stretching the planet past its point of resiliency and demand for protein is set to grow by another 70% by 2050. This is the reason why I moved from the traditional meat industry to cultivated meat at Meatable. I am convinced a collaboration between big meat and cultivated meat is the only viable answer to today’s challenges. The solution lies not in replacing the traditional industries, but in working together to really make an impact.
[Expana] What are you going to be sharing at our Agri-Food Europe event?
[Jeff Tripician] Coming from the traditional meat industry, I am very aware of the challenges the industry is facing. At the Agri-Food Europe event, I would love to discuss the need for change, but also the potential for collaboration in the broader food / meat industry. At Meatable we believe meat is part of our future, but only together we can make sure we are able to keep on consuming meat in a way that doesn’t destroy our planet. Join me to find out more on the potential of cultivated meat and its place within the meat industry.
