Expana launches Eastern European Glass Indexes

Expana has launched five monthly Expana Benchmark Prices (EBP) for the Eastern European glass markets.

The initial proposal was announced in a market note published on Thursday, August 29, 2024, which can be viewed here. The decision to go ahead with the launch was communicated in a market note on September 16, 2024, which can be viewed here.

The specifications for the assessments are as below:

The assessments reflect the transactable value at 16:00:00 London time.

Container glass is widely used and highly sustainable, and the new assessments bring transparency to the Eastern European market, where glass containers are increasingly traded in large volumes and over one-third of Europe’s glass container production takes place. Glass production in Eastern Europe caters for robust demand from regional and international vineyards and breweries, as well as food packaging companies, and the assessments bring clarity to pricing in the region. The assessments complement Expana’s existing container glass coverage for the UK and Western Europe and give Expana’s subscribers a comprehensive view of input costs for the Eastern European glass markets.

The index assessments use a basket of underlying prices, based on a typical blend of costs for glass manufacturing to provide a reference price for the manufacturing cost of glass containers.

The assessments are rounded to the nearest Euro cent using the rule that decimals of four (4) or less round down, and decimals of five (5) or above round up, e.g. €1.744 are rounded to €1.74, and €1.755 are rounded to €1.76.
